Climbing On High!
Crossgates Shopping Centre is pleased to announce its security manager, Dave Coulthard has climbed Ben Nevis and raised over £240 for charity – during his honeymoon!
Dave and wife Tina, decided to climb the Scottish giant as part of their honeymoon celebrations. Tina’s co workers at the Old Red Lion heard about it and decided to set up a collection tin for them.
The pub is always looking for ways to raise money for charities, especially the locals who use it as a regular watering hole. Many of them, and some of the part time staff, work at St James Hospital on or around the cancer care ward. When they heard of the climb they started shaking the tin and collecting money.
Dave and Tina Coulthard climbed via the more interesting, but more difficult route via the North East Face and avoiding the ‘tourists’. To reach the summit the route involved a number of scrambles up rock faces and the last 1,000 – 1,500ft of the climb was done in cloud, with solid blocks of ice – in the middle of August!
The total time spent on the route was just over 8 hours, making it a long but exciting climb.
Back on flat ground and the safety of the Old Red Lion Pub, the money was collected and totalled to £120, which the Crossgates Shopping Centre matched! The money will be donated to the Yorkshire Cancer Centre, at the St James’s Institute of Oncology in Leeds.
This newly built centre is an outstanding world-class facility that now delivers unparalleled levels of cancer care and treatment to the people of Yorkshire. Crossgates is pleased to contribute to the centre, which provides first-rate levels of cancer care and treatment for a catchment population of 2.6 million!
