Crossgates Shopping Centre was recently awarded the Recycling Project of the Year award at the Community and City Pride Awards 2009. Crossgates Shopping Centre was presented with the prestigious award on Friday 30th January by Paul Hudson from BBC Look North at the Civic Hall in Leeds.
Last October, Crossgates entered their ‘Green Awareness Campaign’, which included fun activities for the younger recycler and a fantastic £1,000 shopping prize for the ‘Message in a (PLASTIC) bottle’ competition. The Centre also held a ‘Go Green’ day, in partnership with Leeds Paper Recycling, which promoted the Centre’s new recycling facilities which were supported and enforced by the Centre’s tenants. The day also provided information to show how easy recycling can be, with clearly marked recycling areas that shoppers could use.
The Centre was up against strong competition, including St Chad’s Church in Headingley, but came up trumps on the night, winning the Recycling Project of the Year Award. The Centre was awarded £300 which will be donated to Martin’s House, the Centre’s 2009 charity of the year which cares for children and young people with progressive life limiting illnesses. All monies raised by the Centre throughout the year will be awarded to Martin’s House Children’s Hospice.
Stephen Seymour, Crossgates Centre Manager, commented “We were very pleased to win the Recycling Project of the Year Award as this is true recognition of everyone’s hard work, dedication and commitment to improving our recycling at the Centre and supporting the local business community, and residents who will drive this initiative to achieve continued benefits and savings.
“The diversity, scope and range of the entries in the Community & City Pride awards was really impressive and showed how committed the people of Leeds are to improving and developing sustainable ways to reduce waste and improve their communities. For me, there were no losers on the night, as everyone who took part in this year’s Community & City Pride Awards was a winner and improved Leeds and their community. I applaud and commend them and am proud to be part of this forward thinking and positive group. I would also like to recognise the essential part that the City Council takes in running these events to encourage and recognise initiatives like those taking part this year.”

About Crossgates Shopping Centre
Crossgates Shopping Centre is a community retail shopping centre which focuses on the importance of sustainability and responsibility towards the environment. It was agreed that the retailers, shoppers and the community would benefit from education on recycling and waste management, which is why the ‘Go Green’ day was organised in partnership with Leeds Paper Recycling, to promote the Centre’s new recycling facilities. The main objective was to educate shoppers, tenants and the wider community about the importance of recycling and waste management. The project included several wheelie bins, which were positioned within Crossgates Shopping Centre to encourage shoppers to recycle instead of using normal rubbish bins.
The campaign was so successful, Crossgates Shopping Centre went on to replace the existing and obsolete recycling facilities with more efficient and user-friendly machines for the whole Centre.
Since the recycling review, Crossgates Shopping Centre has reduced its general waste skip collections by over 50%! This has radically reduced rubbish going to landfill, increasing the previous recycling levels and reducing Crossgates’ carbon footprint through less frequent waste collections.
Crossgates Shopping Centre has also actively sought to work with local businesses and has established a partnership with Leeds City Council and other multi-agency awareness groups to promote the importance of recycling and the ultimate benefits both to the organisations as well as, more importantly, the positive effect on the environment.
Crossgates Shopping Centre has extended its recycling initiative to include tenants in Arndale House, who are now also benefiting from the reduced landfill and increased recycling facilities at Crossgates Shopping Centre. The services include; bottle banks, clothing recycling, paper bank, shoes recycling, mobile phone recycling, battery disposal for tenants and many more.
