Having set off for Horsforth Golf Course at 03.30...
Commentary from Centre Manager Steve Seymour...
"Having set off for Horsforth Golf Course at 03.30 we stole a march, teed off at 04.15 and to our amazement was shortly joined by a lone golfer following us round. Conditions were very fresh with heavy dew making for some interesting putting. 3-hours 15 later we were exiting the car park to join the morning commuters and headed for Woodhall Hills Golf Course still fresh and eager, with clear skies and a good weather forecast ahead.
The stunning views at Woodhall Golf Course and clear fairways and greens allowed us to continue with our good progress and a brisk 3-hours 40 later minus a few more lost balls saw us finish and reach the halfway mark of our 4-courses in 1-day challenge.
As swiftly as traffic and speed limits would allow we then headed to South Leeds Golf Course and phase 3 with its tight fairways and challenging greens. With Phil’s Sat-Nav on the blink we managed to get disorientated and added some unwanted extra yards to this 18-holes as we wandered between holes. Quite surprisingly we still managed a respectable 3-hours 40 for the penultimate round and were even still in good humour mainly down to my “golfing skills”.
As we munch our way across Leeds taking on much needed liquid and food we could now see the finishing post in sight with 54 down and 18 holes to go as we headed to Howley Hall Golf Course for the final leg of our charity fund raising day.
Having gained some 2-hours 40 on our anticipated last tee off time of 7.00pm and seeing a full car park and golfers moving around the course a quick check was needed with the Club Pro. to try and keep our momentum going. After a brief rest bite for a change of shirts and socks we were off again in glorious sun shine in to the fantastic views, well kept fairways and brilliant greens of Howley Hall which have to be played to be fully appreciated. As we started the back 9 the sun was now like us waning and was then lost behind dark rain clouds which were to take their toll on us as we reached the 15th. The heavens opened and rained small farm animals yet quite bizarrely at the same time brilliant, the sun shone through making visibility very hard to see where our now tired and wayward shoots went.
As we pressed on in the rain I looked back over Rory and his brolly to see a brilliant rainbow stretch across the sky as the rain bounced down around us and just had to stop and capture this moment in what had been a great day.
Final view the Par 3 18th at Howley Hall backed by a most inviting 19th hole, picture perfect as 4 very tired and wet friends stop to take a final breather before driving for the green some 72-holes, almost as many lost balls (mainly mine), approx. 16 miles and over 16-hours since the 1st tee. Throughout the day as we played and laughed our way around 4 great courses we were greeted by one and all with warm and friendly smiles and supportive comments, which along with Mr Ibuprofen and Mrs Paracetamol which spurred us on to the final hole.
The last and now most important challenge that lies ahead of us is to collect our sponsorship monies and make those much needed funds available to; Martin House, Zoe’s Place, Grace’s House and Francis House...four fantastic Charities.
I cannot close without saying a few personal thanks to the following people; everyone who came along and supported the golf simulator event, all the Centre staff and Tenants for their help and support, Designer Outlet, Reservatee.com, Crossgates Press, Howley Hall, Horsforth, South Leeds and Woodhall Hills Golf Clubs, my family, Julie at Martin House and everyone involved in making the 4-in-1 golf challenge possible. Finally Rory, Phil and Simon, sorry lads for losing my sense of humour on the 14th at Howley Hall along with yet another ball on this occasion not down to a bad shoot but alien abduction (Phil?), great friends, great company and I look forward to next year’s Longest Day challenge!!
I am confident I speak for all four of us when I say we had a great day raised much needed funds for our charities and as Arnie say’s “we’ll be back”.
